Setting up QoS on D-Link Switches

Most of us have had to deal with setting up QoS on our Internet routers, but few of us have had to deal with bandwidth issues on the internal LAN. If you have a situation with high bandwidth usage that is causing voice quality issues on the internal network, you will need to implement some form of network strategy to deal with it.

Generally speaking, your choices include:

  • Complete separation of data traffic and voice traffic onto their own networks
  • Implementing VLANSs in order to isolate traffic
  • Implementing a QoS strategy across the network

Implementing QoS is the easiest way to go so it should be the first choice as a few minutes work may be able to make a big difference. Implementing VLANs can make a big difference in your network performance as well but there is more management to setting it up and dealing with logically isolated networks.

A complete separation of data and voice traffic is the best possible configuration but it requires twice as many switches and cable runs so the cost is often too much to justify.

In this video, we look at setting up QoS on the D-Link switches via their SmartWeb interface.
