Google gets 1 Million VoIP Phone Numbers
Google has recently reserved 1 million phone numbers with communications giant, Level 3. These numbers will be used for Google’s highly anticipated Voice service, dubbed “Google Voice”. This free service will allow its users to unify 1 phone number (provided by Google) with all of their other phone numbers. This will allow users to hand out their 1 unified number, which can in turn ring a cell phone, home phone, work phone, and so forth.
Google also provides a few other unique features such voice mail, conference calling, free text messages, voice mail to text transcription, advanced call routing, call screening, call switch (switch calls to other phones) and call recording. One of my favorite features will be voice mail to text transcription, which basically will translate any voice mail into text, and then SMS the message to your device. This simulation of a PBX (Phone System) is going to be groundbreaking for many users who currently do not have this type of feature set available (especially for free).
VoIP technolgy is ever advancing, and companies as large as Google adopting it are only the beginning for our industry. I am extremly excited to see how sucessful a project as large as Google Voice will be.
