At a Glance: Grandstream GXV3140
Grandstream video phones have been very popular units for quite a long time, and with the addition of the GXV3140 to their family, they are going to continue to be a go to solution for VoIP video phones. The Grandstream GXV3140 is the new flagship of the Grandstream phone fleet; this is their new, next generation, high quality IP phone. Besides providing high quality audio, the GXV3140 comes packed with all sorts of goodies, like the ability to track RSS Feeds, a Built in web browser, a weather application, music streaming capabilities and more. But the standout feature on this phone is the pre-configured, FREE, IPVideoTalk account that ships with each unit.
Each and every GXV3140 that ships from Grandstream comes with one of these accounts, so that you can call other IPVideoTalk accounts for free. What does this mean? When you buy a GXV3140, you can make and receive video calls with no monthly fees and no other charges. Right out of the box this phone is ready to go, no need for any costly configurations or service plans. This feature is huge! Looking to have video conference capabilities in multiple offices? Have remote employees and need a low cost way to keep them in the loop? Looking for a way to save money and keep in touch with family in distant cities or countries? The GXV3140 can do all of that and more.
No matter what your application, you can buy multiple GXV3140s, then drop them in wherever you need them, and you are done! It is that simple! Of course if you to use these phones in conjunction with existing sip service or a PBX, the normal registration processes would be required. But as for the video account, it is plug and play. Once your phone boots, you will see that these phones display a seven digit IPVideoTalk account number, which essentially serves as your phone number. You can then make calls to other IPVideoTalk accounts using this number. The video call features are not limited to the IPVideoTalk application, but I was very impressed with the work that went into shipping a unit that has this ability out of the box.
The quality of this phone is great, I would expect to pay a lot more for this phone than it costs. The LCD has very crisp graphics, and the web browser loads graphic intense pages and displays them very well. The base stand can slide into two different slots to allow for two different angles of use. The Camera, located on the top of the unit, has a control knob located on the backside of the unit which allows you to change camera angles, so you can have a comfortable call without having to bend around to get on screen. The unit is very stylish, with silver buttons and trim that really stand out against the black unit. The side of the unit has a composite output, so that you can tie the phone into speakers and a larger screen if you want to have multiple people on screen for a conference call. This is a great feature, allowing this phone to take the place of much more expensive systems.
As always with Grandstream products, administration is a breeze. the GXV3140 comes with a much improved web GUI, which is very intuitive and allows even novice user to configure their phone with great ease. The GXV3140 can be configured with up to three accounts total (including the IPVideoTalk account).
From the start of my time with the GXV3140, to the end, I was blown away. This is a phone of the highest quality. If you try to find a similar quality phone with the same features, you could end up paying over $400 dollars a unit. But at $249.95, this phone is a deal! The money you can save by using the FREE IPVideoTalk account alone will pay for these units. I was expecting a quality phone from Grandstream when this unit was announced, and they delivered.
