Aastra Announces Electronic Hookswitch (EHS) Support
Tired of having a clunky handset lifter on your phone? If you are using certain models of Aastra phones then you may be one your way to electronic-hookswitch-nirvana. If you aren’t familiar with EHS, this allows you to answer a call from your headset without actually picking up the receiver on the phone. This means less fumbling, less accidental hangups, less issues answering calls.
Technical Talk
Aastra’s EHS implementation is based on the DHSG “Drahtlose Hörsprechgarnitur” (German for “wireless headset”) standard, also sometimes referred to as the “Siemens standard”. This is probably the most common standard and is supported by numerous other phone manufacturers such as:
- Aastra: Office IP 70/80, Open Phone 71/73/75 and now also 6753i, 6755i and 6757i
- Polycom
- snom

- Cisco
- Siemens
- Avaya
- Swyx
- Agfeo
- Elmeg
- Tiptel
Since Aastra phones were not designed with EHS in mind, Aastra engineers had to get creative about how to provide this interface. The workaround that Aastra came up with is to utilize existing Expansion module port & Headset jack to support DHSG on Aastra 675xi phones. To make this work, Aastra has designed a special “Y” cable that allows connectivity between the phone and Headset base.
This solution will not work on all phones, there are a few caveats to keep in mind:
- Solution only supported on 6753i, 6755i, 6757i and 6757i CT models
- Phones Require software release 2.4 or higher
- DHSG + usage of an expansion module is not possible!
